Beginning Reading:

Say AHHH for the Doctor

  • Rationale: There are many different phonemes and it is important for children to know them to be able to achieve reading and spelling. The lesson will teach children the short vowel correspondence o=/o/. Students will gain confidence in regards to identifying and recognizing the o correspondence.

  • Materials:

    • Image of a child opening his mouth for modeling the sound

    • Letterbox

    • Crayons

    • Decodable Book: Doc in the Frog by Shelia Cushman

    • Assessment worksheet (one for each student)

  • Procedures:

    • Say: Have you ever been to the doctor and they have asked you to open your mouth and say ahh? Then I will pull out the picture of the child opening his mouth for the doctor. In this lesson we are looking for sounds that also say the /o/ sound. Everyone stick out their tongue and make the /o/ sound with me.

    • Then we will move on to a tongue twister using the o = /o/ sound after I think everyone has picked up the sound that short letter o says. The tongue twister will be The doc said to the frog jump on the log.

    • Say: Today our tongue twister is The Doc said to the frog jump on the log. Lets say it together normal and then we will street out our /o/ sound. “The Doc said to the frog jump on the log” and now lets stretch it out together “The Doooc said to the froooog jump on the loooog”

    • Say: Now I am going to list some words with the /o/ sound and raise your hand to answer which word you hear the /o/ sound. Do you hear the /o/ sound in MOP or NAP? GOT or CAN? JUMP or DOC?

    • Then I will give a few more words for an assessment and if the students hear /o/ sound then they will place their hand on their head. We will do this with no sound and just the hand gesture on their head.

    • We will then get a letterbox lesson out to work on spelling the words with the /o/ sound.

    • Say: “Everyone get you letterboxes out so we can use the /o/ sound in our spelling. The first word we are going to model is the word C-o-p. Each phoneme will go in an individual box.” Then I will walk around to make sure we have achieved the model word. We will continue till the spelling of 3,4,5 letter phoneme words. The words will be [words: 3- top, rock, cat 4-frog, snack, block, club, cross 5-frost, splat]. I have thrown in review words for the kids on sounds we have already learned. We will go one by one with the different words and I will go around the room to make sure everyone has spelled it correctly before moving on.

    • The last thing before we do an assessment will be a book talk on the Doc in the Frog.

  • Assessment: I will pass out the worksheet that have pictures and words that contain the short o sound.  The goal for the students is to connect the picture to the correct word like matching game. Then they will be aloud to color the pictures.
