Emergent Literacy:

Millie Mooed and Mooed for More Milk

Rational:

In this lesson I will be teaching the letter /m/ and the phoneme represent by M. To be successful reader and speller it is important for students to understand letter sounds correspondence. Students will gain confidence in regards to identifying and writing the letter symbol M by hand hang gestures and practice of pronunciation. Students will also recognize the /m/ in written and spoken language.

Materials:

1.) Primary Paper

2.) Whiteboard with "Millie Mooed and Mooed for More Milk" written on it.

3.) Pencils

4.) A worksheet with different objects on them that begin with the letter /m/ and some that do not.

5.) The book Millie Waits for the Mail by Alexander Steffensmeier.

Procedures:

  • Explain Why:

I would say to the students. "We have learned that different letters in the alphabet make different sounds. Today we are going to learn about a new letter and the sound it makes. Does anyone know why we learn the sounds and learn to recognize the letters?" If no one had provided an answer lead them to - "because knowing the sounds and letters it helps use to read and decode words that we may not know."

  • Review:

  1. The first thing I would do with my students is review the letters we have already learned so far.

  2. I would go through the alphabet starting with A and have one students raise his/her hand to tell me the letter and what sound it makes. For example, "Madison, what is the first letter of the alphabet" - Student response "A" - I would say "Great, and what sound does it make" - Student response "/a/ and sometimes /A/." And then we would continue on with what we have covered leading up to the letter m.

  3. After we have done all the letters leading up to the letter m I would then ask the students "what letter do you think comes next.". Hopefully the students will know what letter comes next and respond with the letter "m".

  • Explain How:

  1. I will then explain to the students how the lesson with go and that way we will move through the lesson.

  2. “Today we going to learn the letter m and the sound that it makes, then we are going to learn how to write the letter m and also we are going to fin different things in the classroom that start with the letter m.”

  • Model: “Today we are going to learn about the letter m. Does anyone know what the letter m sound makes? mmmm. That sound is one you make when you hear that we are having cookies at lunch today and they smell really good, you would say, mmmmm. Everyone put your lips together and try to push through the mmmm sound. Now everyone say it together with me as you rub your tummy. We are all going to now try a tongue tickler. Everyone repeat after me Millie mooed and mooed for more milk. As you hear the mm sound rub your tummy.” Then the students and I will go through the sentence multiple times and they rub their tummies when they hear the mmm sound to remember the phoneme of mmm.

  • Simple Practice:

  1. The first way we will practice is by learning how to write the letter m, both capital and lower case.

  2. I will say to the students “Now we are going to learn of to write the letter m,starting with the lower case. Start at the fence, go straight down to the dirt, then go back up that straight line and near top of your line go out and touch the fence and make a little hill, go down to the first and then make another little hill just like you did before”

  3. As I am telling the students this I will be modeling it on the board, so the students can follow along.

  4. We will write the lower case letter m ten times and as they are working on it I will go around to make sure everyone is able to write the letter.

  5. “Alright, everyone did so well on that now lets see if we can write the uppercase letter M. So we are going to start in the sky and draw a straight line to the dirt. Now draw a line from the sky all the way to the dirt that is diagonal. Then make another diagonal line up to the sky going the other direction. once you reach the sky this time, draw a straight line down and you are finished.”

  6. I will be modeling this while I am saying this to the students. Then I will again get them to draw the letter M ten times while I walk around to see if anyone needs help.

  7. “Now that we have learned how to write a lower case and upper case letter m I would like everyone to draw something that starts with the mmm sound on a blank piece of paper. Be creative.”

  • Whole Texts:

  1. The kids are just learning their letters it would be hard for them to read. So I will write simply sentences on the board that have the letter m in them.

  2. At some point in the day I will read to them Millie Waits for the Mail, by Alexander Steffensmeier

  • Assessment:

  1. I will ask the students to write me a sentence with one word that has the m sound in it. The students will be using invented spelling along with thinking of words that make the mmm sound.

  2. I then will distribute a work sheet with 10 pictures on it that some start with the letter m and others that do not. They will then color the items that start with the mmm sound.
